Steve was born in 1963 in Gadsden Alabama, and was an accomplished athlete. He turned down a football scholarship to play football for the University of Alabama and began working on cars with his father at an early age and soon started his racing career when he joined the All Pro series and won the championship in 1985. He moved up to the Busch Series in 1986 and ran only 4 races over the next few years due to a lack of sponsorship. In 1989 he landed some sponsor’s and won some races and eventually won the championship in 1993.
He started in the Cup Series in 1993 and ran 151 races over 10 years where he had 18 top tens.
